Rationale

This course will focus on the fundamentals of ornamental horticulture and its production and management practices, design landscape horticulture.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLO)

CLO1: Explain scope, importance; and classify ornamental plants and plantation crops

CLO2: Describeproduction and management of flowers, ornamental plants and plantation crops

CLO3: Design landscape architecture of gardening, roadside plantation and arboriculture

CLO4: Manage and develop the cut and dry flower business

Importance and classification: Scope, importance and classification of ornamental plants, plantation crops; their area, production, import and export scenario

Production technology of ornamental plants: a) Commercial flowers: Rose, dahlia, carnation, tuberose, gladiolus, marigold, gerbera, jasmine, lilium and Orchids; b) Bedding flowers:  Zinnia, cosmos, calendula, anthurium. c) Ornamental shrubs, trees, palms, ferns and cacti.

 Production and processing of plantation crops: Production and processing of plantation crops:  Rubber, tea, coffee, oil palm, cocoa, betel leaf, betel nut and bamboo.

Landscape architecture and design: Formal and informal garden; principles of home and institutional gardens; principles of landscape gardening; development and maintenance of lawn, turf, hedge, playgrounds, indoor gardening, resort planning and management, road side plantation and arboriculture
